Solidago caesia, Blue Stemmed Goldenrod

PS-FS, Zone 4, blooms August - October, 3’ x 2’, medium to medium-dry, deer resistant.

This is one essential plant for a pollinator garden. If you have been hesitant because you feel it may cause hay fever, adjust your thinking, as that’s simply not true. Goldenrod pollen is extremely sticky and it’s not possible for the pollen to be airborne. The true culprit that causes hay fever is Ragweed, which blooms at the same time, but looks entirely different. Nancy loves to include Golden Rod blooms in bouquets because of their color and also because they do not drop pollen!

We’re very excited to have this essential plant that does well in shade or as an understory plant. We plant them in different growing conditions to test how they do. This is a woodland goldenrod that does well with only 3 hours of sun. It also tolerates clay and rocky conditions. It’s a clumping perennial that grows by fibrous roots. It forms attractive loose clumps with arching stems and long, thin leaves. Small clusters of bright yellow flowers form in the leaf axils for about half the stem's length. Stem color in mature plants has a dark, somewhat bluish, violet tone.

Goldenrod is an essential plant that supports bees, wasps and butterflies late in the season. It has a special attraction for bumble bees and sweat bees. Host plant for several moth species.
