Pycnanthemum pilosum, Hairy Mountain Mint, Quart Pot
Pycnanthemum pilosum, Hairy Mountain Mint
FS - PS, Zone 4, Blooms July - August, 3’ x 1’, medium to medium dry, deer resistant
This is a terrific Mountain Mint and in some ways superior to Pycnanthemum virginianum as it is a stronger plant and doesn’t splay in FS! It has a lovely mint like scent as it is in that family.
We have grown it for 4 years as part of our cut flower business. We grow it in full sun and cut the foliage extensively for bouquets. It grows right back! It forms clumps, growing from rhizomes. We have in two locations and have not had a problem with it spreading too much. It is recommended to stake it in shadier conditions and will only grow to 2’ in partial shade. The leaves have been used in potpourri and teas.
The whitesh blooms have light lavender markings that draw numerous bees, wasps (great black & golden digger wasps), flies, beetles, butterflies and moths. It produces nectar all day and is a must for a pollinator garden. The small seed heads at season’s end draw birds, it also produces good cover for birds.
