Hibiscus moscheutos, Rose Mallow, Quart Pot
Hibiscus moscheutos, Rose Mallow
FS-PS, Zone 5, Blooms Jul-Sept, 5’ x 2-3’, Wet-Med wet, deer resistant
Keystone Species - This plant supports 28 species of butterflies and moths. It is particularly important for wetland ecosystems. Rose Mallow is the key plant for the Rose-mallow Bee (Ptilothrix bombiformis). Otherwise known as Hibiscus Turret Bee, this solitary bee is a strict pollen specialist of the Malvaceae family. This solitary, ground-nesting bee is a specialist pollinator whose life cycle is closely synchronized with the blooming of hibiscus plants. Another factor is the overwintering benefit the plant provides. Birds use materials from the stems to make nests. The massive blooms (reaching 6–10 inches across) provide significant nectar for hummingbirds and long-tongued bees.
Hibiscus moscheutos, commonly known as hardy hibiscus or swamp rose mallow, is a vigorous, sturdy, rounded, somewhat shrubby, hairy-stemmed, woody-based perennial of the mallow family. It typically grows to 3-7’ tall and to 2-4’ wide. It is native to wet spots (marshes, swamps, floodplains, river banks, moist meadows, and moist woods).
Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun. Best in moist, organically rich soils, but does surprisingly well in average garden soils as long as those soils are not allowed to dry out. Regular deep watering is advisable. Tolerates some light shade, but full sun with good air circulation produces the best flowers, the strongest stems and the best environment for resisting potential diseases.
Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. It is a host plant for moths and the Painted Lady, Gray Hairstreakand the Common Checkered Skipper Butterflies.
DA Plant Notes - In two years of growing this plant we have not encountered any disease. It is a fast grower that will bloom in season 1. The following year it is one of the last to emerge and then shoots up fast. We grow it in FS, average moisture with no problem. The Common Checkered Skipper is a favorite at DA, They are adorable and not as skittish as other butterflies.
